U.S. Embassy Bamako supports education for girls and young women in Mali through the provision of books and other school materials to the Centre Vincent Maria in Bamako.  The Centre provides literacy and technical training to 139 young women and girls, most of whom have never attended school and who come to the capital from rural areas in Mali to search for work as domestic labor.  The Centre provides the young women with basic literacy instruction in French as well as with technical training (including tailoring, etc.), and training on health and sanitation.  Some of the Centre’s students have been so successful that they have been able to transfer to high schools around Bamako to complete their formal education.

Women make up more than 50% of Mali’s population and they contribute significantly to the country’s economy.  Supporting education for girls and women has long-term, positive effects on their quality of life, their decisions related to family and children, their health and that of their families, and their ability to earn an income.  Supporting girls and women also supports Mali.
