Reporting a Death of an American Citizen
 

Any Death of a U.S. citizen should be reported immediately to the U.S. Embassy.

If you need to report the death of  U.S. citizen abroad, please contact the Consular Section. We will arrange a private, quiet time for you to come in to discuss the situation.

Information you will be asked to provide to the Consular Section

If possible, please be ready to provide the consular representative with the following information:

  • Name of the deceased
  • Date and place of birth
  • Passport number
  • Date and place of death
  • Cause of death
  • Location of the remains
  • Name and contact information of the next-of-kin

When you come to the Embassy, please bring the following documents:

  • The original death certificate
  • Proof that your relative was a U.S. citizen (such as: U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or Certificate of Naturalization)
  • His or her social security number (if possible)
