Warden Messages 2011

Possible Protests 25 March in Bamako-Coura and ACI-2000 Areas of Bamako

24 March 2011

The U.S. Embassy in Bamako is issuing this warden message to inform U.S. citizens that it has received information that a demonstration to oppose international coalition action to impose a no-fly zone in Libya is planned by the Islamic Youth Group on Friday, 25 March 2011 following mid-day prayers (around 1-2 p.m.).

The demonstration is planned to start near the “Independence Monument,” move to the French Embassy, then along l ‘avenue de la Nation, and onward to the U.S. Embassy.

It is unknown at this time if the Malian Government has authorized the demonstration.  Should even an authorized demonstration grow violent, however, the police may move to disperse the protesters.  It is also possible that others in support of the intervention in Libya may counter-demonstrate, which could result in a clash between the opposing groups.

As with any demonstration, peaceful or violent, the Embassy urges citizens to avoid the above area during the scheduled times.  Most demonstrations are generally contained and non-violent but can get out of control very quickly.  If you happen to be in an area in which a demonstration is occurring try to leave the area quickly.  If this is not possible try maintaining a low profile until such time as you are able to get out of the area.
