The Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellowship Program, administered by USDA, helps developing countries strengthen sustainable agricultural practices by providing scientific training and collaborative research opportunities to visiting researchers, policymakers, and university faculties.
A number of fellows from Mali have participated in the program in fall 2010, and have been hosted by the University of Georgia, Campus of Athens (USA). In the course of their stay, fellows have studied themes as varied as the environment and environmental resource planning, food production/ management and food security, agribusiness and marketing, etc. most of which have been centered on poultry enterprise development and fish farming in the context of climate change, and their roles in development – economic, social, environmental, etc.
The Mali USDA-Borlaug Fellows convened a workshop on small-holder poultry enterprise development and food security in Mali on June 9, 2011 at the Nord-Sud Hotel in Bamako.
This one-day workshop shed light on the contribution of poultry rearing as a sustainable livelihood opportunity for the rural women, building on the significant experience gained and lessons learned by the fellows at the University of Georgia – Athens, in fall 2010.
