Medical Treatment
The United States has some of the best medical care in the world, and we encourage qualified applicants to travel to the United States for medical treatment.
United States immigration law does not set aside a specific type of visa for medical treatment. Eligible applicants will receive a B2 visa, valid for the duration of treatment.
Applicants wishing to travel to the U.S. for medical treatment must:
- Complete and print out form DS-156 (in English) (en français)
- Complete form DS-157 (for males between 16 and 45)
- Pay an application fee of $131 at any Banque Internationale pour le Mali (BIM)
- Have a passport with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States
- Have two photos that meet these specifications
- Have a written diagnosis from a licensed doctor
- Have a letter from a doctor, clinic, or hospital in the U.S. stating that they are willing to see and treat you
- Have a letter from the health care provider in the U.S. giving the approximate cost of the procedures
- Show that you have the funds or insurance to cover the costs

On the day of the interview, please bring your completed forms, photos, bank receipt, passport, and medical and financial information with you. If you have not filled out all of the forms completely, or do not have all the necessary documents, you may be asked to return another day for your interview.
Please also bring supporting documentation such as marriages certificates and birth certificates for children. Do not have any documents faxed, e-mailed, or sent to the Embassy; they will be thrown away. Bring all documentation with you to the interview.
Arrive at the Consular Section of the Embassy 30 minutes before your interview time. Please plan on spending up to three hours at the Embassy.
