On June 29, 2007, the First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Laura Bush, visited Mali on the last leg of her four-country tour of Africa. During her brief stay in Bamako, Mrs. Bush highlighted the United States government's commitment to Malian education, health and development. Her activities included a meeting with Malian President Amadou Toumani Toure and his wife, a visit to the Nelson Mandela School Complex (a school which benefits from President Bush's Africa Education Initiative), and a briefing on the $461 million Millenium Challenge Compact that was signed with Mali in November 2006. Mrs. Bush also met with the American community in Mali, including Peace Corps volunteers and local staff of the U.S. Embassy in Bamako.
